About us

This working group was formed as a result of several presentations at the 77th Science Summit Side event held during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2022. The insights and discussions from these presentations highlighted the key risks and challenges facing small island states, such as vulnerability to climate change, economic instability, and limited access to essential services. These outcomes led to the establishment of this collaborative initiative, which aims to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including:

  • Public Sector: Local, state, and national governments, as well as multilateral and bilateral development institutions.

  • Private Sector: Project financiers, local businesses (such as hotels, tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture), and industry associations.

  • Citizens (affected by activities): Individuals and families living near wetlands and biodiversity areas, including indigenous communities and their leaders.

  • Advocacy Groups: Local and national grassroots NGOs, international advocacy NGOs, religious groups, university groups, and research centres.

Together, we strive to address the challenges faced by small island states through comprehensive and inclusive efforts. In this introduction, we will explore the diverse array of organizational resources we offer, empowering small island states to navigate their challenges and harness their potential for a sustainable and prosperous future.
